Watching Over You

Description

Long ago, when the Earth was bare stone under the Sky and rabbits, hares, and pikas were one people, the Mother of Rabbits invented soil so that all creatures could burrow and hide. The lord of the Sky, the King of Eagles was furious and glared down at the world with both his bright eyes. Under his stare plants withered, ponds boiled away, and no animal of the Earth could sleep. He also sent his subjects, the hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls, to harass the creatures of the Earth. After many days of this, the Mother of Rabbits decided she had to fix things. She found a small owl grumbling about being overworked and made a deal. The Mother of Rabbits put the secrets of soil and burrowing in a clay pot and the owl took her to the Sky. She came to the court of the King of Eagles and offered him the secret in return for leaving her people alone. When the king looked into the pot the owl, who was hiding inside, snatched away one of his eyes. To this day, the King of Eagles stares down at the world, searching for the Mother of Rabbits and his missing eye, but he'll never find them on the Earth below because the Mother of Rabbits is still in the sky. When the king gets tired and closes his eye, the mother watches over her children on the world below. Sometimes you can see her silhouette in the light from the king's eye in her pot.
        - Mythology of Rabbits

A fun piece I made based on the image of the rabbit in the moon. I really like the image of a rabbit seeing the rabbit in the moon and creating a mythology based on it.

I also really like the effect that the glow has on this in the dark. The real rabbit in the foreground and the shadow on the moon become almost the same when the lights are out.

I really like anything with rabbits where they have mythology about the rabbit in the moon. I particularly like that even though you (and I) are a huge fan of Watership Down, the subject of this tale is nothing like the Black Rabbit of Inlé.
